Healthcare
Kirkham Board have a highly successful track record of working in the health care industry for NHS Trusts and private clients alike.
We have gained vast knowledge and experience in carrying out projects for the NHS, and have developed an invaluable understanding of how individual Trusts operate.
Much of our work has been undertaken on / in occupied buildings, and/or buildings which must remain fully functional throughout all stages of construction work. This requires expert Project Management to ensure that the work is carried out safely, effectively and efficiently, without compromising the safety of staff, visitors and patients or the cost and quality of the build.
To date Kirkham Board have carried out work for Primary Care Trusts, GP Practices, Acute Hospital Trusts, and Community Estates.
Professional services offered on healthcare projects include Project Management, Design, Quantity Surveying, Building Surveying (defect analysis), preparation of business cases, feasibility surveys, and CDM Coordination.
Torbay Hospital
Theatres 3 & 4
Kirkham Board acted as Project Managers for South Devon Healthcare Foundation Trust in the refurbishment of two large theatres; namely theatres 3 and 4.
The scheme was procured under the Trusts' Procure 21 framework.
Theatre 3 is now used as a surgical theatre, whereas theatre 4 is now uniquely used for both surgical and interventional radiology purposes.
The works had to be carried out in an extremely tight timescale and involved liaison with various third parties, including Karl Storz and Philips, who provided key elements of equipment in the respective theatres.
Fire Strategy
Kirkham Board acted as Project Managers for South Devon Healthcare Foundation Trust in the side wide 'Fire Strategy' works at Torbay Hospital.
The works were procured under the Procure 21 framework and involved upgrading none complaint fire dampers, fire alarms, fire compartmentation, emergency lighting and the like.
The works are part of a rolling programme. Kirkham Board undertook the Project Management role on a six month contract.
Adult Mental Health Projects
-
We successfully converted an existing Out Patients Area into a new facility for the Trust.
The works included the creation of offices, interview rooms, consulting rooms, toilets, a new reception area, break out rooms, and staff areas.
As part of the scheme, various enabling works were required to relocate existing staff who occupied the area to other parts of the hospital. Strategic phasing was therefore required to ensure that areas were completed and handed over at the appropriate time to release other areas, and so on.
-
Both sites had existing seclusion rooms that were not compliant.
We have carried out alteration, reconfiguration, and refurbishment works, including new services, to ensure that they are now both fully complaint with all guidelines and correct standards.
-
The creation of a new Reception area, family room, Sluice, Nurses Station, side road and entrance to facilitate emergency and out of hours access, and a new staircase to enable first floor patients to access the garden area without needing to disturb ground floor patients.
The refurbishment works were challenging as the existing facility needed to remain open whilst the works were being carried out. Careful Planning, Project Management, and liaison with site staff were required to ensure that the works were undertaken safely, and without detriment to the staff and patients remaining in-situ.
-
We successfully converted an existing staff office area into a new ECA suite, which included a new, fully compliant, seclusion room.
Working for Devon Partnership Trust, we have carried out several projects to refurbish existing mental health facilities and create new facilities so that they are light, modern, and compliant in all aspects.

Midvale Clinic
Midvale Clinic comprises of two large Victorian terrace houses in Midvale Road, Paignton which have been opened up to create one large building.
Kirkham Board acted as Architectural Designers, Project Managers, Cost Advisors, and CDM Coordinators in the complete refurbishment of the building, which included extensive liaison with The Care Trust and the buildings' Users to reconfigure the entire building so that clinical and patient areas are on the lower levels, and staff areas are on the upper levels. Previously parents and small children had to be seen in rooms that were located within the roof levels of the building via narrow staircases; which was not practical or desirable.
The building had not been refurbished for many years, which was reflected in the extent of works required.
Kirkham Board also created a state of the art Audiology room within one of the retained rooms, which acoustic tests have confirmed gives the lowest possible noise reduction levels for a refurbished room.
